Upon committing to Arkansas, he became the first in-state McDonald’s All-American to sign with the Razorbacks since Corliss Williamson in 1992 and was considered a key recruit for coach Mike Anderson’s rebuild of the program.

The defending champs were unable to pull out the win in Milwaukee, falling 114-110 to even up the series 1-1 before heading to Chicago for Game 3.

Portis and Thompson were going after a rebound when an elbow from Thompson appeared to hit Portis near his eye. Portis was down for a few seconds before getting up. He went to the locker room at the end of the first quarter.

On Bally Sports Wisconsin’s telecast of the game, Bucks assistant coach Darvin Ham said Portis was “having problems with the vision in his right eye.”

No foul was called on the play.

Portis joined the Bucks’ frontcourt players for warmups during the halftime break but returned to the locker room before the start of the third quarter.

Portis had 10 points and 12 rebounds in the Bucks’ 93-86 Game 1 victory for his first career playoff double-double.

The Milwaukee Buckslost 114-110 to the Chicago Bulls in Game 2 on Wednesday, but even worse than that the Bucks lost two key players in the process. Early in the fourth quarter forward Khris Middleton exited the game with left knee soreness after slipping awkwardly in the middle of a spin move in the post. Big man Bobby Portis left the game at halftime after taking a shot to the eye in the first quarter of the game.

Both injuries hindered the Bucks down the stretch as they were trying to climb back from an 18-point deficit against the Bulls. But Middleton’s injury has far more significance going forward in this series. Bucks head coach Mike Budenholzer said after the game that Middleton suffered an MCL sprain and would get an MRI Thursday to find out more information.

The results of that imaging confirmed a sprained MCL and Middleton will be re-evaluated in two weeks, the Bucks announced on Thursday. That timeline will keep him out for the remainder of the first-round series vs. the Bulls.

Middleton’s injury is a significant blow to a Bucks team that doesn’t have a great deal of depth. It’ll mean more will be asked from Giannis Antetokounmpo and Jrue Holiday on offense, while role players like Wes Matthews and Pat Connaughton will need to start hitting shots at a consistent rate.

When the injury occurred, Middleton was just starting to heat up for the Bucks.

“You feel for him,” Matthews said. “Obviously you feel for him. Khris is a huge part of this team, this organization, this city. Our goal is to win basketball games and get him back as fast as possible.”

League analysts studied and predicted all the likely options for the young player to sign with next. However, he surprised many by signing a two-year contract worth $7.4 million, including a $3.8 million player option for 2021-22, with the Milwaukee Bucks in November 2020.

When the Bucks’ star player Giannis Antetokounmpo was sidelined with an injury early in the season, the Bucks weren’t seen as a likely team to make it to the Playoffs this year. However, as he’s done for most of his career, Portis proved to be the energizer of the team when its star players were unable to play.

Bucks Nation quickly accepted Portis, with chants of “Bobby! Bobby! Bobby!” becoming a common refrain during the Playoffs. With Antetokounmpo’s timely return to the Finals, Portis was able to pull the team through against the Phoenix Suns to become NBA Champions.

Now speculation is rife that the Bucks and Portis might renegotiate his contract. Analysts project that he might benefit from taking the 2021-22 option on his contract, as his value to the team has certainly grown.
