Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson said Wednesday that Bernett’s death was being classified as an apparent suicide and his office was investigating her death, The Wall Street Journal reported.

James Madison’s softball team tweeted Tuesday that its double-header against Longwood University on Wednesday was canceled. “Further impacts to the schedule are yet to be determined,” it said.
Ms. Bernett was named the Colonial Athletic Association’s Player of the Week on Monday.
The award came after the JMU Dukes beat the Drexel University Dragons over the weekend.
“The JMU family is devastated to have lost one of our own,” JMU’s athletics account said in a tweet.
“You have made such a big impact on this team not only as a player but as a person,” she said. “I am so thankful that you were put in my life, and I will always cherish the time I had with you on the field and off the field. I love you forever and always.”
Ms. Bernett, is survived by her parents, Scott and Kim Bernett, and her four siblings.

Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson had said Wednesday that Ms. Bernett’s death was being classified as an apparent suicide and his office was investigating her death.
“Our hearts are aching, hearing the news of the loss of one of our student-athletes,” JMU President Jonathan Alger and JMU Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne said in a letter Tuesday to the school community. JMU is in Harrisonburg, Va., and has more than 19,000 undergraduates.
Death Cause
Authorities with the Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office announced that Bernett’s death has been ruled as an apparent suicide, multiple outlets, including the Associated Press and NBC News report. An investigation into Bernett’s death is ongoing.
“The official report from the medical examiner’s office is pending, and out of respect for her family and friends, there is no other information to release at this time,” Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan Hutcheson told AP.
Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office did not immediately return PEOPLE’s request for comment.
Bernett’s death was announced Tuesday in a joint statement from James Madison University President Jonathan Alger and Director of Athletics Jeff Bourne.
