The athletics community is mourning the death of an adored cross country star, with an Aussie Olympian making a desperate plea.
The University of Wisconsin campus is mourning the death of a beloved track and cross country star.
The New York Post reports Sarah Shulze, 21, died by suicide on April 13, her family announced.
“Balancing athletics, academics and the demands of every day life overwhelmed her in a single, desperate moment,” Shulze’s family said.
“Like you, we are shocked and grief stricken while holding on tightly to all that Sarah was.”
The California-born runner was a member of the cross country, indoor track and outdoor track teams at the University of Wisconsin.
Wisconsin officials released a statement on the weekend regarding the beloved student, who was described as a gentle soul and decorated student-athlete.
“The Wisconsin Athletics community is heartbroken by the unexpected passing of Sarah Shulze,” the university said.
“Sarah was a beloved daughter, sister, granddaughter, friend, teammate and Badger student-athlete.
“We extend our deepest sympathies and sincere condolences to Sarah’s family, friends and Badger teammates during this extraordinarily difficult time.”

Wisconsin officials put out a statement Friday that referenced the family’s announcement.
Shulze was a junior from Oak Park, California. She competed in cross country, indoor track and outdoor track, and earned academic all-Big Ten honors in 2020 and 2021 for cross country and in 2021 for track.
Family members said she had been an intern at the Wisconsin legislature and volunteered as a poll worker during the 2020 presidential election. They said those experiences “helped develop her deep love for politics, social causes and women’s rights.”

Brigitte and Scott Shulze are Sarah’s parents. Brigitte, her mother, was born in November 1969 and is now 52 years old.
Her father, Scott, is 54 years old and was born in November 1967. She happens to be the only biological child of her parents.
Sara’s family confirmed on April 15 that she had committed suicide two days earlier. They provided no explanation for why this occurred.
